First Mate

Ocean Youth Trust North is seeking a well-organised, sociable and energetic person who is able to inspire young people to make positive changes to their lives through ‘Adventure under Sail’ on-board our 20m steel ketch, James Cook.

Based in North Shields, James Cook operates across the North Sea and the Irish Sea with occasional voyages to European and Baltic Ports.

With its origins in the Ocean Youth Club, OYT North has been operating as a standalone charity for 19 years and currently takes 500 young people to sea each year.

We are looking for someone who can work closely with our skipper and volunteers to deliver Sail Training/ Youth Development voyages to a consistent standard and to ensure the safe running of our vessels.


You will need to be an RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or above with a Commercial Endorsement and an ENG 1 medical certificate.  You will be required to obtain an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check with assistance from OYT North if necessary.
