First Mate

Ocean Youth Trust North requires a full time mate for the 20m, steel ketch James Cook.

Formerly part of the Ocean Youth Club, OYT North has been operating as a standalone charity for 18 years providing young people with the opportunity for personal development through Adventure under Sail.  

The key responsibilities of the post will be to work closely with the skipper and our volunteers to deliver Sail Training/Youth Development voyages to a consistent standard and to ensure the safe running of the vessel.

Based in North Shields, James Cook operates across the North Sea and the Irish Sea with occasional voyages to European and Baltic Ports.

We are seeking someone who identifies with young people and is able to interact with them positively to become a key member of our team.

Terms of Employment 

We initially offer a fixed term contract renewable by mutual agreement at the end of the season.  Remuneration to be agreed according to experience


You will need to be an RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or above with a Commercial Endorsement.  

The successful candidate will be required to obtain an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check and an ENG 1 medical
