Simon Aertssen

We are delighted to welcome Simon Aertssen as the Skipper of James Cook for the 2024 season.

Simon is Belgian and normally lives and works in Copenhagen as an engineer.  He is taking unpaid leave from his job to pursue his interest in sailing and will be with us on a voluntary basis until the middle of September 2024.  He first came across James Cook while participating in last year’s Tall Ships Races onboard stv Betty from Aalborg.  During a visit onboard he was attracted by our mission of giving meaningful life lessons at sea, something he has previously been involved with during many years in the sea scouts.

Simon is 27 and has been sailing since he was 11 years old.  He can usually be found all year round out on the Øresund, match racing on DS37’s. He also enjoys sailing longer distances as a skipper of chartered boats around Skåne and Bornholm, an area which James Cook has frequently visited in the past.

Simon joined James Cook for the delivery back from Ipswich and has since been undergoing induction and familiarisation, and his first voyage in command with South Shields Marine School.

We are sure you will make Simon feel welcome and look forward to a successful season ahead with him.
