Sail Training Career Development Vacancy

OYT North’s Career Development Programme is structured over two years to bring together the necessary skills, experience and qualifications for participants to embark on a career in the maritime industry.

The programme is aimed at those who seek a career within Sail Training, however some previous graduates have moved on into successful careers within various other maritime organisations or have used their experience as an alternative means of entry to college or university.

This is a very practical programme run on small commercial vessels – both sail and power - in multiple sailing areas. On and off the job training is provided, leading to RYA qualifications and the development of practical skills in youthwork, sailing and vessel maintenance.

Participation is on a voluntary unpaid basis with food and accommodation provided whilst on-board. The financial equivalent value is estimated to be over £8k along with less tangible benefits such as sound practical experience, job readiness and employment references. It offers the chance to become part of the OYT North family, have varied and exciting experiences and make new friends.

Formerly part of the Ocean Youth Club, OYT North has since been operating for 17 years providing young people with the opportunity for personal development through Adventure under Sail. Based at North Shields, James Cook operates in the North Sea and Irish Sea with occasional voyages to European and Baltic Ports.

Offers of a cadetship will be made subject to receipt of an enhanced DBS check and ENG1 medical certificate. Assistance will be given with the applications for these.

Please email an expression of interest to steve.lennon@oytnorth.org.uk giving details of your background and any relevant experience. For further information, please call OYT North office on 0191 257 1212. There will be an opportunity to discuss the position with someone currently on the programme.
